31 May Sequester News: What’s Trending in Travel Now
May 31, 2020
Until the borders open up internationally, domestic travel is surging. Driving trips, private villas and hotel buyouts are trending. Unbelievably, a lot of options are sold out.
Some of my top picks are:
Taylor River Lodge – A collection of 8 beautifully appointed log-cabins set along the riverside in Colorado. Taylor River Lodge offers a largely all-inclusive experience featuring privately guided activities and a more customizable and luxurious option to typical dude-ranch experiences. The fly-fishing is incredible, trust me!
Scarp Ridge Lodge – A 6-bedroom lodge in downtown Crested Butte, CO offering 5-star accommodations and the perfect home base for exploring the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Scarp Ridge Lodge operates like a glorified B&B in the summertime. This is a perfect buy-out especially if you combine it with Taylor River Lodge.
Sleeping Indian Ranch– Located 47 miles northwest of Telluride, this 8 bedroom private home is situated on 550,000 acres in the unspoiled Cimarron Range where you can escape and experience true Americana at its best. Activities range from hiking and horseback riding to snowmobiling and heli-skiing, all amid a backdrop of forested mountains and cliffs. This is a haven where elk, moose, black bears, and bald eagles grace the land and skies. By the way , Sleeping Indian is managed and staffed by Auberge Resorts so it doesn’t get much better than this.
Vermejo– Vermejo Park Ranch, a 550,000+ acre ranch owned by Ted Turner, is the jewel of New Mexico. There’s over 1200 wild bison, 19 fishable lakes, 30 miles of streams and a partridge in a pear tree! Whether riding horseback through open fields, fly fishing for Rio Grande cutthroat trout, mountain biking, hiking or relaxing in the spa, Vermejo has something for everyone.
Mayflower Inn & Spa located in Washington, Connecticut, is the perfect road trip for East coasters since it’s only a 2 hour drive from NYC, 2 ½ hours from Boston or 2 ½ hours from Providence, Rhode Island . This exquisite country retreat has all the ingredients of a romantic hideaway: an exceptional dining experience, customized spa programs, luxury accommodations and personalized attention to each and every guest.
Dunton Hot Springs located deep in the San Juan mountains of the Colorado Rockies , is actually located in an old , abandoned ghost town reincarnated into a boutique cabin retreat when the current owner purchased it in 1944. This is a tailor-made retreat for the adventurer who enjoys hiking the 14,000 ft summits, rock climbing the surrounding San Juan peaks, trail rides or rafting in the many rivers nearby.
- Fun fact: In 1885, Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank in nearby Telluride and hid out in Dunton until the coast was clear and he could safely ‘get outta Dodge’
- Butch carved his name into Dunton’s Saloon bar -the next time you’re there, you can see it up close and personal!
- While Dunton Hot Springs is open all year round, their sister property, Dunton River Camp , is only open from June to mid- October. With only 8 luxury tents all with en- suite bathrooms, gas stoves and internet , it is the perfect buyout location if glamping is your thing.
Bear & Bear also has an arsenal of exclusive homes not offered to the general public. We arrange for concierge service, private chefs, tailor-made activities and customized amenities.
